Staying Safe this Winter

In freezing conditions think about whether you need to leave your home. Be cautious and take extra care if the ground is slippery. Wear shoes or boots with a good grip and consider mixing salt and sand to grit paths. Think about asking neighbours for help to keep paths clear in bad weather. Consider if you could help vulnerable neighbours.

Stockport Homes does not offer a gritting service or provide grit. The only exception is at Sheltered and Extra Care Accommodation schemes where grit may be provided and residents may use it at their own risk.

If you decide clear ice and snow:

  • Clear the snow and ice early in the day. Fresh, loose snow is easier to move.
  • Use grit on the cleared areas to provide grip and prevent re-freezing.
  • Use salt or/and sand – not water. Using water to melt snow or ice is dangerous as the water can re-freeze and cause black ice.

Stockport Council grit key roads and pathways across the borough. Grit bins are provided in some locations https://www.stockport.gov.uk/gritting-roads-and-pavements/gritting-routes-and-bins.

Stay safe.

  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast.
  • If bad weather is forecast make sure you have everything you need, food, medication, a bottle of water in case the water supply is interrupted.
  • Have torches handy in case of a power cut. It’s a good idea to have spare batteries too.
  • Keep emergency numbers nearby. Call 105 if there is a power cut.
  • Try to avoid going out in bad weather and avoid using the car. If you do go out in the car pack blankets, a bottle of water/hot drinks, snacks, a shovel, de-icer or scraper, mobile phone, and charger.
