GMP and Stockport Homes Group successfully close a problematic property on the Mottram Street Estate.

The Safer Neighbourhoods Service at Stockport Homes Group have successfully secured another Closure Order on a property at Chesworth Close on the Mottram Street Estate, following an escalation in reports of serious anti-social behaviour. Working closely with Greater Manchester Police and the Council, the Safer Neighbourhoods Service was able to gather sufficient evidence to take legal action against the premises, utilising powers under the ‘Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014’.

The Closure Order was granted at a hearing at Tameside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 19th November 2024 and came following persistent anti-social behaviour, which was occurring at the property and having a detrimental effect on local residents and the community. The Safer Neighbourhoods Service and Greater Manchester Police had received complaints of a high number of visitors frequenting the property in relation to, criminal activity, drug-related activity and physical violence with the use of weapons and arguing.

The Closure Order means that no one is permitted to reside in, or visit, the property for a period of three months. The order will provide respite and protection for the residents who were affected by the behaviours whilst Stockport Homes Group proceeds to take back permanent possession of this property.

Anti-social behaviour is not a victimless crime but has wider impacts on the local community. The ongoing actions of the occupant and those attending the property were causing significant distress to neighbours and others. I would like to thank those who provided the information which enabled action to be taken at court. This closure order shows the importance of the public speaking to us and the actions we will take
